Customers on the Anglo-Scottish sleepers had been complaining about the noise emitted from the air-conditioning system on Mark III stock which was preventing them from having a good night's sleep. Ilford Depot was awarded the contract for fitting silencing equipment. This accounts for the appearance of former locomotive 84009(departmental ADB968021) at the depot because it could pick-up power through its pantograph to test the modifications carried out. 31 August 1984
