Welcome
Welcome to my gallery. Photography has been my passion for a long time and I have been taking railway photos for well over 30 years now - firstly in black and white, then colour slides. In 2006 I graduated to digital images but I still continue to take a few film based images. I am not convinced about the durability of digital images.

I am based at Coggeshall-near Colchester-but I have nationwide coverage of railway subjects. I also get a great deal of my railway entertainment abroad these days; both in Western Europe and beyond. I love SNCF trains in particular, and I also enjoy Germany for photography.

Most of my archival work is on negatives and slides and I will continue to scan them to add to this collection as time permits.

Please enjoy my train pictures and thank you for looking. Do make comments-don't be shy!

About Me
Now retired from my main career, I can devote much more time to my train photography. I get out on the lineside most mid-week days when it is sunny ( sometimes accompanied by my little miniature schnauzer, Ruby). It certainly helps to keep me active. I am less interested in doing railway photography at weekends these days because much of the interesting traffic (ie. freight) does not run. Also I don't seem to have the stomach for long day-trips any more and I tend to confine my activities to lines nearer home.

I get a great deal of my railway entertainment abroad these days:- both in Western Europe and beyond. I certainly don't belong to the school of thought which believes that interesting railways stop at Dover! Quite the reverse, in fact, so much of the British scene has become very predictable and 'tame'. I love French trains in particular. There is so much of interest going on in 'la belle France' and the country is blessed with significantly better weather than over here. I find German trains interesting, too, and I am constantly amazed by the plethora of freight traffic available to photograph on the other side of the channel. The European Community 'open access' regulations have done much to encourage interesting traction and new services in Europe.

I love to do slide shows and talks to various railway and other groups - it is my way of putting something back into the hobby. If you know of a group that might like a show or a talk please get in touch. My e-mail address is at the bottom of this page.

Keep a look out for me on the lineside in East Anglia please and do introduce yourself! I love a chat! Oh, and by the way, my little dog is friendly, too, and she certainly won't bite!

Location:Coggeshall, Essex.

    A Last Breakfast on NXEA
On Thursday 29 January 2009 I went with three friends to sample 'The Great British Breakfast' on offer by NXEA in their restaurant cars. This feast of a breakfast is served 'at seat' and we had heard that the facility was to be withdrawn the following day. We caught the 09.00 from Liverpool Street to Norwich at Colchester (traction provided by 90012) and we certainly enjoyed a magnificent start to our day. By chance we timed our visit admirably because the chef of the day, John Smith, was completing his final shift ever and ours were the last four breakfasts that he prepared before finishing his career and retiring. They were superb, John, a testament to your skills. Thank you, enjoy your retirement. Here are a few photographs from the trip.
    London Trains(Digital)
To complement my 'London Trains' scanned slides collection I am going to slowly assemble a collection of digital pictures of trains around the Greater London area. There is a fantastic variety of trains to go out for around the London area. Stay tuned for future uploads!
    Transys Clacton Depot
On Friday 12 December 2008 I was privileged to be allowed to attend a small ceremony at the Transys Clacton train facility. It marked the completion of a project to 'refresh' the entire fleet of Cross-Country Clas 170 dmus. The final two units were present in the depot with 170110 finished and about to be released into traffic later that day. My thanks are extended to Cross Country Trains, Transys Projects and Porterbrook Train Leasing for their hospitality on the day. The complimentary fish and chips were excellent!
    A Lazy Day at Cossington
After almost three weeks without any significant sunshine in Essex, a good forecast for Friday 19 September 2008 tempted me to do a longish daytrip to the Midlands. Having driven from Colchester to Cossington (near Sileby in Leicestershire) I was in no mood to chase about. So I stayed where I was and let the trains come to me. And a good variety there was, too, despite the stone traffic being at a low ebb because, presumably, of the onset of the recession. Here is a sample of what was on offer. For once the weather forecast was more-or-less spot on.
    Variety at Newport
August 2008 and a day trip to Newport, South Wales, from my home in Essex. A rail fare of just over twenty pounds (using my senior railcard) represented outstanding value and what a variety of traction and liveries on view! Booked on-line with NatEx East Coast to get a 10% on-line booking discount for great gricing entertainment. On the day, First Great Western excelled themselves, too, modifying my ticket validity when trespassers on the line disrupted train services and disabled a booked connection. Here are a few pictures from the excursion.

    Spanish Railways
In April 2008 I visited sunny Spain. I found a superb line close to where I was staying which was both scenic and with good traffic levels. Here are some of my photos from this trip.
Part 3 Scanned Slides (Anglia Excepted)
Parts 1 and 2 now contain over a hundred slides. Time for a new one! The same theme - just non-Anglia train slides that I find interesting.
Essex and East Anglia Part 2 (Digital Images)
My original collection with this title has now reached 100 pictures and is becoming unwieldy. Time for a new one!
Scanned Slides (Anglia Excepted) Part 2
My original non anglia scanned slides gallery is getting unwieldy with over 110 scans included. This new gallery will continue the theme - just British modern traction pictures that I have taken outside my home area which I find interesting.
    Scanned Slides (Anglia) Part 2
With 160 slides already uploaded into Part 1 it is time to make another gallery of East Anglian Slides. I will gradually add to this new gallery as time permits.
    British Steam (Digital Pictures)
I am gradually building up some digital images of BR preserved steam. I will put them in this collection from time to time.
Trams and other transport Stuff (Digital and Scanned)
I just love trams! I love anything that runs on rails really. Here are a few such gems from my collection.
    London Railways (Scanned Slides)
Some scanned slides taken in the Greater London area over the last twenty years or so.
Trains in the Garden of England
I went to university in Canterbury during the mid 1960s and Kent has been one of my favourite counties ever since. Unfortunately it is not always easy to record interesting trains in the county and the choice of routes for anything which does run is bewildering! Here are a few scanned slides of trains in 'The Garden of England'.
    Benelux Railways (Scanned Slides)
Belgium, Luxembourg and The Netherlands have interesting railway sytems which carry plenty of traffic. Here is a selection of slides from my travels around the countries.
    British Steam (Scanned Slides)
My railway interest was spawned on steam as a lad when I lived in Yorkshire during the 1950s and 60s. These days I tend to avoid going out to photograph main line steam. I find the antics of the photographic 'Fangio mob' - chasing trains, trespassing and being generally idiotic very distasteful and embarrassing. I enjoy visiting steam preservation lines but I do wish they would keep their locomotives DIRTY! When I can afford to buy my own Tardis I want to go back into the 1950s. Taking my current photographic equipment and knowledge with me!
    Indian Railways (Scanned Slides)
In October 2003 I had the chance visit India. It was not an exclusively railway trip but in the three weeks that I was in the country the opportunity arose to take a few pictures. Unlike in this country the local railwaymen are immensley proud of their railway - incidentally India's biggest employer - and they are only too pleased to show hospitality to Western visitors. Here is a selection of scanned slides.
    Scanned Slides (Anglia Excepted)
Some scanned slides rom my travels up and down the British Isles in the search for interesting railway subjects to photograph.
    Scanned Slides (Anglia)
My good friend Les Nixon always says that 'you take your best pictures within 20 miles of home'. It may be true where he lives up in the Peak District but I am not sure if what he says is true in East Anglia where I live. Here are a few scanned slides spanning the last 30 years or so from my home area. By the way, Les also says that if he lived where I have to live he would have packed up railway photography years ago!
    Monochrome Images ( Anglia Excepted)
    Monochrome Images (Anglia)
I cut my photographic teeth in East Anglia during the late 1970s early 1980s. I had to use monochrome at first- I couldn't afford two cameras and black and white photography was cheaper - especially if you did your own processing.
UK Modern Traction (Anglia Excepted) Digital Images
My conventional photography covers the whole country but my recent entry into digital photography does not stretch quite so far. Here is a few images from outside East Anglia which I have taken in the past couple of years. I will add to the collection as I take more.
    European Railways (Digital Images)
I get much of my railway entertainment these days in Europe where there is much of interest to photograph. Here is a collection of European images from my digital camera.
    Essex and East Anglia(Digital Images)
I have been taking railway pictures in Essex and East Anglia for thirty years. In late 2005 I graduated to digital imagery but it took me a long time to convert from my old Olympus outfit which I used before. Here is a selection of images from my digital camera.
    Corsica
Corsica is a wonderful island for railfans. Metre gauge trains in superb mountain and coastal scenery.
    American Railways (Scanned Slides)
I took a trip to the west coast of the USA during 2000. Unfortunately Mr. Kodachrome succeeded in losing seven of my precious KR25 films - 900 exposures! I still had a few on Fuji film and here is a selection.
    French Railways (scanned slides)
If you like railways you like France because it has wonderful scenery and a superb selection of trains to pursue. The country is blessed with significantly better weather than the UK. I particularly like the south, not the hustle and bustle of the Cote d'Azure, but in the Rhone Valley south of Lyon where you get all the climatic advantages of the Mediterranean without the hassel.
    German Railways (Scanned Slides)
I get much of my railway entertainment abroad these days. The British scene has become so tame and predictable. Particularly sad is the decline of freight traffic in Great Britain. Quite how Germany gets so much traffic onto its railways defeats me! The torrent of freight which traverses the middle Rhine valley is unbelievable. Even at the weekend the freight just rumbles on. Go try it!
